Why Pittsburgh?
Pittsburgh has a long history as a center of manufacturing and headquarters companies which contributed to a rich civic culture, including renowned museums, parks, libraries, medical centers, etc. The decline of manufacturing in the late 20th century brought challenges to the region but in recent years, Pittsburgh has seen an explosion in economic activity.
Today Pittsburgh is leading the nation in terms of the number of young people with advanced degrees and has seen a greater influx of millennials than the national average. Google and Uber have established research bases in the region to test autonomous vehicles. Challenges for the region sound familiar to those of us in MSP ? particularly the looming labor shortage. Pittsburgh expects an average of 29,000 baby boomers to be eligible for retirement each of the next ten years. Also like MSP, Pittsburgh lacks diversity and has launched several strategies to attract more and diverse populations.
Among the topics we are likely to explore on this year?s ICLV are how the ?steel city? is creating an arts economy out of the ashes of its former industrial infrastructure. We?ll also look at efforts to create a regional development fund that would provide $49 million in patient capital mortgage loans to catalyze development. And, we?ll explore Pittsburgh?s burgeoning tech sector that is home to Google, Apple, Bosch, Uber, IBM and some 1,600 tech firms that generate more than $20 billion in payroll annually. Pittsburgh is also home to federal tech installations, including centers for cyber defense, robotics, energy research and the nuclear navy. And, we?ll learn about how Pittsburgh is capitalizing on its extensive ? and long neglected ? riverfronts to create walkable, dynamic, urban places.
